Further Insight & Opinion
Come whale-watching season (Aug – Oct), drive straight through Hermanus and don’t look back – because you’re on your way to De Kelders and Danger Point, where, as the locals well know, the best whale-viewing around is to be had.

De Kelders is only about 50 kms further southwest than Hermanus on SA’s Whale Coast – and it’s much tinier, which means much fewer people to get in the way of the whales.

It also means fewer amenities, of course – but don’t despair, Coffee on the Rocks is there to keep you well-provisioned with many tasty victuals, including huge hunks of cheesecake. Relax on the deck, spot spouts and fins, and check into the Whalesong Lodge next door if you don’t fancy making the drive back that afternoon.
