It’s difficult to single out the chief delight of the Belvedere Guest House, but there’s plenty to consider: the views, the security, the huge garden, the portable gas stove, and so on.

The portable gas stove? you ask. This item may indeed be best thing the house has going for it, given Cape Town’s precarious power situation. And that it’s in place – along with a battery-operated lamp – is indicative of the extent of the thoughtfulness on owners David and Collette Baldwin’s part, who’ve made it quite easy for guests to turn Belvedere into a home away from home.

Three pleasant bedrooms sleep six people – which means that you can have your own house in Cape Town during high season for less than R300/person/night. That’s extremely reasonable, especially given the accommodation on offer: two stories; 3 bed/3 bath; a full kitchen and lounge; satellite TV; a huge, tiered garden and secluded front lawn; the peace and quiet of the Mount Rhodes security estate; maid service twice a week; and a 15-minute nip over the hill to Camps Bay. (Add another 10 minutes to reach Cape Town’s city centre.)

If there’s a drawback, it’s the lack of a pool – but the Hout Bay harbor and beach are just down the road.

Generous discounts are negotiated for long-term stays, nudging the Belvedere Guest House even further up in the desirability stakes.
