Cape Town (& Hout Bay) Landmark: The Sentinel

Spotted! The Sentinal, a majestic outjutting that marks Hout Bay‘s western tip.

Where is it? Just west of the “harbor village” (comprising Hout Bay Heights, closest to the harbor, and Hangberg Village, the valley’s “Coloured” township, which is actually at the base of the Sentinel) | Map

What is it? It’s the product of the Cape Peninsula’s massive granite reef, that extends well out into the sea, and is responsible for many similar promontories, like the more famous Cape Point.

Why would I ever go there? You probably won’t – because you’ll want to take routes that give you views of the peak and its bay, like Chapman’s Peak Drive, or a Hout Bay boat trip (try the Tigger 2).

What’s nearby? The Hout Bay harbor, with its several restaurants, curio shops, and splendid strolling beach.
