Further Insight & Opinion
“That sort of thing” being immersion up to your eyeballs in the faux-sophistication of so-called upmarket shopping. Cavendish Square is where Louis XVI would go, if he had to buy something in Cape Town. It’s boutiquey in the extreme – not to the exclusion of big retailers like Woolworths, mind you – and a favorite haunt of the special kind of mall rats that are bred in Cape Town’s southern suburbs. (You know, the Paris Hilton-wannabe kind.)

In short, my opinion is that visitors should steer clear – the V&A Waterfront is the place to go if you want to shop – except in one exceptional circumstance: if you’re looking for elegant jewellry at reasonable prices, then Cavendish’s Damjee Jewellers (+27 (0) 21 683 9946) is highly recommende. Damjee is also the best place in town to source Indian jewellry. Please tell them where you got the tip!
