Review
The River Club is a locals’ place, and while Your Correspondent is always keen to unveil hometown favorites to a wider audience, in this case the scales of jugdment weigh slightly against a recommendation.

There are, however, two things that quickly tip them back in The River Club’s favor for particular interests: golf and live music. The club is home to Cape Town’s best driving range and practice golf course – beautifully situated on the banks of the Liesbeek River – and is a regular pit stop for local bands. It’s a good place to watch sporting events, too.

On a recent outing there, a friend and I sampled the pub sandwiches: a club burger and a ciabatta with roasted veggies and pesto. We ate outside, listening to the gentle thwock of golf balls being sent to their reward, but the pleasant-ish setting – reminiscent of a theme park on a slow day – didn’t do much to improve the averageness of the food. If you’re planning to have lunch in Observatory, any of the restaurants on nearby Lower Main Road (Map | SA Blog) would make a better choice.
