It’s an entrenched problem on Camps Bay’s famous Victoria Road strip, the string of cafes, restaurants and shops with the gorgeous beach views: finding a decent bite to eat is as difficult as finding a parking spot.

Rarely, in Cape Town, does the service ever score higher than the food, but opinions at a recent table for three at Theo’s Grill, in the Promenade Centre at the end of the strip, were unanimous that, on this particular night, the waitress did better than the chef.

After skipping starters and ordering our mains, we waited about an hour for the food to arrive – and began to suffer hunger pangs. Our pained looks were met with many apologies, but diners cannot live on the sympathy of waitresses alone.

Richard – who chewed ravenously through a half-dozen toothpicks for placebo nourishment – scored his veal florentino (R78), which looked like a plate of creamy soup with parsely sprinkled over it, 6/10; while my Lovely Assistant’s burger (R39) was pronounced far inferior to those to be had at Royale in town. My own sirloin escargot (R89) was cooked properly – not too rare, not too done – but the “garlic-herb butter sauce” tasted more like BBQ, and the escargot count was a measly three.
