Things to do in Durban

Durban is the third largest city in South Africa and is located on the east coast of the country. It is the busiest port on the continent. Durban is a popular destination for those who want to spend time in the nature or practice water sports.

Here is a list of some of the most popular tourist attractions and things to do in Durban.

Spend some time in the Indian District


Head to the Indian District if you want to enjoy some authentic spicy Indian food or indulge in some shopping. You must get some textiles and spices. The Oriental Bazaar and the Indian Market will keep you occupied for hours.

Spend a day at the Ushaka Marine World

This is a marine theme park which includes a salt water aquarium houses over 30 indoor and outdoor exhibits and includes a variety of wildlife. There is also an area which comprises slides and pools for those looking for some adventure. Or you can spend some time at the Ushaka Beach located within the Marine World. Surfing is possible here.
During the peak season the Ushaka Sea Word (aquarium) is open Monday to Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The entrance fee is ZAR 110 for an adult and ZAR 85 for a child (age 3-12). If you want to visit the pools and slides area, you have to pay another entrance fee (same as above). Additional fees are to be paid for each island adventure.

Tour Juma Musjid

Juma Musjid is the largest mosque in the Southern Hemisphere. It has a capacity of 4,500 worshipers. The mosque is located on the corner of Grey & Queen Street.

Take a walk on the promenade


Thanks to recent developments, there is now a promenade connecting the Ushaka Marine World all the way to the Moses Mabhida 2010 World Cup stadium. The promenade is filled with people walking, joking, biking and enjoying their day and evening on the shore.

Visit the Old Fort

The Old Fort was built in 1842. Some years later the facilities were expended with an armory and barracks.

Visit the Shakaland – Zulu Cultural Center

If you are passionate about the culture then you should plan to visit a Zulu village. You can watch the day to day activities of those living here , enjoy a traditional lunch and even learn the dances. Make sure to try the unusual beer.

A day trip and safari to the Hluhluwe Imfolozi Game Reserve

This game reserve is located on the north coast of KwaZulu-Natal is home to 84 species of game and many species of birds. Here you can also see the “Big Five” (lions, buffaloes, rhinos, elephant and leopards) as well as other African animals.

Shop at Victoria Street market


Take your time and walk among the 180 stalls of the Victoria Street market. Aside from the fresh fruit and vegetables, you can also buy spices and wood articles.

Take a scenic ride on the Umgeni Steam Railway

Trains run on the first and last Sunday of each month , twice daily at 8:45 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. They depart from Kloof Station (Stokers Arms).

Spend half a day at the Durban Botanical Gardens


Spend some time among the trees and flowers, or enjoy an afternoon tea here. Come to the gardens on Sunday and enjoy the sight of newlyweds having their photos taken.

Tour the Assagay Coffee Farm

If you like coffee then you shouldn’t miss a visit to the Assagay Coffee Farm. The coffee shop is open on weekends from November 26 so you can also taste the final product.

Half day at Fort Victoria

Fort Victoria was built by the British in 1839 to protect their occupation but it was conquered by the Boers in 1842.

Spend a day at the beach


Whether you soak up the sun, swim , walk hand in hand, try some water sports, fly a kite, or go horse riding, you surely won’t be bored when you decide to spend your time on one of the many beaches in Durban.

Put on your hiking shoes

If you like an active holiday then you’ll love Durban. Put on your hiking shoes and head to one of the many trails available. There are trails in the Dlangala Reservations, located 90 min from Durban. You can also try on of the 5 Ngele Hiking Trails in the Weza State Forest (you must go with a group). Another option is one of the 6 Oribi Gorge Nature Reserve Trails.

Extreme sports

If you are passionate about skydiving, ballooning, or paragliding, you’ll be happy to find out that there are plenty of things to try while in Durban.
