Further Insight & Opinion
There’s a little taste of Belgium in the petit France of the Cape winelands: Huguenot Fine Foods in Franschhoek. Although the small shop is stocked with bottles of homemade preserves and local honey, those items are just a sop for the chocolate-averse. The true delight behind the emporium’s quaint, gilded windows is a galaxy of hundreds of hand-crafted chocolate goodies, from Belgium-style truffles and pralines to colorful, foil-wrapped frandises.

All chocolates are made on the premises – you can watch during weekdays – by a team of chocolatiers who were trained in the gooey arts in Belgium. The shop is owned and managed by members of Franschhoek’s historically-disadvantaged “Coloured” community, thus scoring high with “Fair Trade” shoppers. It’s chocolates are nothing short of divine, and it easily makes SA Blog’s “Best of Franschhoek” list.
