Stars Aligned for Africa at World Cup
It has not failed to escape SA Logue’s notice that, in the world of sport, French-speakers are sitting pretty at the moment. Consider that in the past two days a French woman has won Wimbledon; a man who can converse with her as naturally as any compatriot – and whose mother is South African, incidentally – followed up her feat on center court; and, in the Tour de France, Sylvain Calzati, a Frenchman, won today’s gruelling stage.
That’s three out of four for the French speakers. But the biggest challenge is still to come: tonight’s World Cup match, in which an African side dominated by les gens qui parlent Francais take on a formidable Italy for the title of World Champions.
