Stories From the 18-19 Feb ’06 Weekend: What You Missed

SA Blog brings you South Africa news from the weekend which you may not have seen. (Note: over time, some links may expire, as stories are archived.)

We wish all our American readers a Happy President’s Day!

  • Cape Town and Western Cape hit by series of power failures – again. Clearly, blackouts are a problem that will be with this city and province for some time to come. Your Correspondent is quite frankly fed up with them. He went out and purchased a gas stove this morning, so he can at least have a cup of tea the next time it happens. • Bob Geldof in South Africa. Strangely, the news media hasn’t picked this story up, apart from a brief radio interview Monday afternoon. If anyone cares to send in a relevant link, I’ll add it.
  • Extreme heat in northern KwaZulu Natal, eastern Mpumalanga and eastern Limpopo provinces. Temperatures reached 50 degrees Celsius (122 F – before humidity!) – with more of the same expected this Wednesday. SABC News | SA Weather Service
  • Khutsong anti-government protests continue. A provincial boundary re-drawing exercise “moved” the Khutsong/Merafong township from Gauteng to North West Province a few months ago, which has led to extreme volatility in the township, in the run up to local elections on 1 March.
