Further Insight & Opinion
The best time to angle for a table at La Fromagerie is after lunch, when it’s less busy and you can dally to your heart’s content in what has to be one of Franschhoek most idyllic settings. The La Grange farm dates to the 17th century, and its vines are no more than a 30-second walk from the heart of the bustling village’s main road.

Although the fare is fine – the trout is fresh from Franschhoek’s lakes, and the cheese assortments are impressively varied – somehow the place seems most appropriately suited to a leisurely tea with scones, or, on a hot day, a few beers on the verandah under the whoosing ceiling fans.

It’s a pity that, in an area as proud of its vinous tradition as Franschhoek, only a few wines are available by the glass at La Fromagerie – and they’re all to be avoided.

But the setting trumps all. This beautiful hideaway gets the “Best of Franschhoek” badge.
