South Africa’s Embarrassment of Travel Award Riches

It has come to SA Blog’s attention that South Africa’s performance at something called the World Travel Awards, held in London last November, bore fair comparison to the United States’ performance at the 1984 Olympics (when, erm, the Soviet Union didn’t participate).

SA’s utter dominance across the “best of Africa” categories – there was not a single award we didn’t pick up – leads one to suspect high levels of complacency about the African continent among the voters. That, or high levels of PR-spend on the part of the winners. A quick visit to the Awards’ website only boosts one’s suspicions about the degree of the organisation’s pull with the martini-sipping set. (Very high, one fears.)
