Getting from Cape Town to George

George is located half way between Cape Town and Port Elisabeth and is the gateway into the beautiful Garden Route. It is the sixth oldest town in South Africa and is an ideal location to explore the stunning landscape and enjoy some active time in the nature.

Quick summary

The cheapest way to get between Cape Town and George is by regular bus. For about US$30 and almost 7 hours on the road you’ll get to the destination. Renting a car is a good idea as well, especially if you like the freedom of driving on the open road.

Flights from Cape Town (airport code: CPT) to George

There are direct flights from Cape Town International Airport into George Airport run by Airlink and South African Airlines. On large booking engines you can book the South African Airlines flight for fares starting at US$141 per person, one way. The flight time is 55 min.

Buses from Cape Town to George

There are several options if you want to travel by bus from Cape Town to George.
You can choose Intercape and take the Mainliner between the two cities. The travel time is 6 h 50 min (first departure is at 6 a.m.). Fares start at ZAR 250 (about US$30) per person, one way.

Another option is the BazBus , which is a hop on – hop off option. The bus leaves Cape Town at 7:15 a.m. and arrives in George at 3:15 p.m. The fare is ZAR 1250 (about US$151) per person for the entire Cape Town to Port Elisabeth route (one way).
If you plan to do more traveling by bus during your stay, choose the travel pass (ZAR 1400 / US$169 for 7 days).

Trains from Cape Town to George

There are several scenic trains which pass through George on their routes but they don’t stop here.

Driving from Cape Town to George

You can also rent a car and drive between the two cities. There are three possible routes , the shortest being 430 km. You should be able to cover it in about 5 h 30 min.
Please remember that driving in South Africa is on the left hand side of the road, just like in the UK but opposite to the USA.
